July on the Farm: Blooms, Breakdowns, and Big Projects
Sharpen your clippers—it’s harvest time!
The fields are bursting with color, and this week we’ve been swimming in flowers. One of the most exciting moments? The very first sunflowers of the season finally opened. Every stem feels like a small celebration.

What’s Blooming This Week
Our harvest buckets are overflowing with:
Sweet William, Forget-me-nots, Sunflowers, Ammi, Green Mist, Snapdragons, Winged Everlasting, Starflower, Bupleurum, Gooseneck, Statice, Scabiosa, and Rudbeckia.
These stems made up some of the most stunning summer bouquets we’ve created so far—each one a burst of color and texture, straight from the fields.

Midseason Slump? You’re Not Alone
This time of year brings long days, sore backs, and a kind of tired that settles deep. Everyone feels it—my team, my parents, my girls… and definitely me.
One day this week I told one of my crew, “I’m cranky and I don’t think I can handle the farm today.”
Without skipping a beat, she smiled and said, “No problem. I’ve got it.”
That’s the kind of people I get to work with. The kind who step in when someone needs support. Who make the hard days manageable. I say it often, but it’s worth repeating: this farm runs because of my team. They’re the backbone of everything we do.

The Tractor Saga Continues
That new tractor we ordered? Still hasn’t arrived. It was scheduled for early this week, but a few hiccups with the dealer and delivery crew pushed things back. Now they’re saying tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
There’s a long list of fall flowers waiting to be planted, and we’re eager to get them in the ground.
Fall Flowers and Heatwave Survivors
Speaking of planting: remember those flowers we tucked in during that brutal heat wave?
They’re thriving! I was worried for them, but they’ve powered through and are growing beautifully. Before long, we’ll be adding zinnias and marigolds to our summer bouquets.

Weeding the Jungle
One of the week’s big tasks was clearing out a high tunnel in preparation for our mum crop.
The weeds? Over six feet tall. Not joking—we had our own little jungle in there.
Lamb’s Quarter, also known as White Goosefoot or wild spinach, is having the time of its life in that tunnel. While it’s edible, we’ve got so much that ours went straight to the compost pile.
Now that the space is clear, we can see from one end of the tunnel to the other. It’s finally ready for tilling and planting. Progress feels good.

Hoop House #6
My dad and husband have been building our sixth hoop house using a simple, functional design my dad created years ago.
More protected space means more flowers through spring and fall. It’s a big project, but an exciting one—these are the structures that make season extension (and more flowers!) possible.
The Weekly Bouquet Bar Is Here
We’re launching something fun at The Flower Shack this week:
The Weekly Bouquet Bar!
Build your own bouquet with flowers freshly harvested from our fields. We’ll be offering this each week now through the first frost.
Come by, get your hands on some blooms, and bring a piece of the farm home with you.
Thank you, as always, for following along. Whether you’re nearby or across the country, we’re grateful for your support.
