From Frost to Sunburns: A Week on the Farm

Frosty grass!

Weather Whiplash and a Whole Lot of Hustle

What a week it’s been! We went from wool sweaters, coats, and scraping frost off our windshields… to thunderstorms, highs in the 80s, full sun, sunburns, and 100% humidity—all in just five days. It was true weather whiplash.

We started the week with a low of 34°F and ended it sweating under summer skies. To say the shift hit our team hard physically is an understatement—but we powered through and accomplished so much.

Flower Farming Doesn’t Skip Steps

This is the tricky part about farming flowers. As soon as the weather turns warm, flower requests start rolling in (which we love!). But even though the sun is shining, the plants still need time to grow. They can’t go from frost to full bloom in a matter of days—it takes patience and care.

I share these weekly updates because I want you to see the real story behind every bloom. It’s not instant, but it is always worth it.

Planting dahlia tubers.

Dahlia Planting Marathon

The big project this week was getting our dahlia tubers into the ground. We had two full fields prepped, and every dry day, we hustled. The team planted 41 rows—over 50 varieties of dahlias! We have about 15 crates left, and once those are in, we’ll be officially done with this huge task.

It’s hard work, but come September, we’ll be standing in a sea of color. (And yes, we’re planning a Dahlia U-Pick Event—details coming soon!)

Peonies

The Fields Are Blooming

The harvest was absolutely stunning this week. Peonies started blooming—and wow, they never disappoint. Their season is short, so we soak them up while they last.

Other beauties harvested this week included:

  • Campanula

  • Stock

  • Snapdragons

  • Irises

  • The last of the Baptisia

  • Anemones

  • Scabiosa

The mixed bouquets were bursting with color and fragrance. I hope you got to bring some home!

Mixed bouquets

Stormy Days = Seeding Days

While thunderstorms rolled through Friday, we shifted gears and spent the day seeding more summer crops. We started trays of:

  • Zinnias

  • Marigolds

  • Amaranth

These seedlings will be out in the fields before we know it—future blooms in the making.

Thanks for Following Along

As always, thank you for being here and following our flower-filled journey. Whether you’re buying bouquets, reading the blog, or cheering us on from afar—your support means everything.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!
