Cold, Rainy Days & the Start of Summer Blooms
A Much-Needed Breather
It’s been two weeks since I’ve been able to sit down and write one of these updates—thank you for your patience. Last week, I took a much-needed break. This time of year is always a busy one on the farm, but throw in sick kids, and everything just gets more complicated. A spring bug made its way through our house, slowly and stubbornly, but I’m happy to report that everyone is finally feeling better. My girls are nearly finished with the school year, and I’m hoping this was the last round of illness until next fall.
Spring Weather Whiplash
Let’s talk about the weather—because it’s been something else lately. Cold, rainy, windy… and did I mention cold? Over the weekend, we saw a low of 37°F. That’s not what we expect this late in May. We even had to light a fire in the wood stove, and I was thankful I hadn’t packed away my wool sweaters yet.
On top of the chill, we had 2.5 inches of rain fall in just one day. While I’ll never complain about receiving rain (we’ll be begging for it by July), I do wish it didn’t come down quite so hard and fast. It makes staying on schedule tricky—but as always, we do what we can.

Keeping Things Moving
Despite the soggy conditions, we didn’t slow down. We kept planting inside our high tunnels, harvested thousands of stems, and made hundreds of bouquets. The team has been amazing, especially as we inch closer to finishing one of our more time-consuming planting tasks: lisianthus. Just one row left to go!

The Blooms Keep Coming
We started harvesting some exciting new blooms this week: Campanula, Stock, Snapdragons, Baptisia, Dutch Iris, Mock Orange, and a few early Peonies. Their arrival was perfectly timed—our spring crops are nearly finished.
The Ranunculus and Anemones gave us their final flowers this week, and what a season it’s been. Honestly, it might be the best crop of Ranunculus and Anemones we’ve ever grown. Our new irrigation system has made a huge difference. It’s easy to forget just how much water flowers need until you see how they thrive with the right care. Until next spring, you beautiful blooms—rest up.

A Garden of Our Own
Over the weekend, we began expanding our family garden. I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks. I’m glad I waited to plant though—it was simply too cold. And judging by the messages I’ve received, I’m not the only one who held off! That said, this coming weekend will be the last chance to pick up plant starts at The Flower Shack. So if you still need a few veggies or flowers for your garden, now’s the time.
Seeds, Starts & Looking Ahead
Behind the scenes, we’ve been busy seeding summer crops: celosia, zinnias, and marigolds. They’ll head out to the field soon. Dahlia planting was on my list for this week, but the rain pushed that task to next week. The tubers are ready and waiting—just like we are.

Warmer Days Are Coming
Even though this stretch of cold, wet weather has been challenging, I know sunnier days are just around the corner. Thank you, as always, for being here with us—supporting the farm, sharing our journey, and enjoying the beauty that each season brings.
